Not only has no one ever drilled to the centre of the Earth, no one has ever even managed to drill through the Earth's crust. In fact, we know more about outer space than we do about what's under the Earth's surface! We know that Earth has layers. The Earth is made up of a crust, mantle, and core.
Is it possible to drill into the center of the Earth?
It's the thinnest of three main layers, yet humans have never drilled all the way through it. Then, the mantle makes up a whopping 84% of the planet's volume. At the inner core, you'd have to drill through solid iron. This would be especially difficult because there's near-zero gravity at the core. How long would it take to drill to the center of the Earth?
The deepest hole in the world; the Kola Superdeep Borehole, took about 20 years to drill one third of the way to the mantle. That is 60 years to break into the mantle, which is about 83 times bigger than the crust, so it would take 4,980 years to break through the mantle plus the additional 60 years to break the crust. Why can't we dig to the center of the Earth?
You can never "get" to the center of the Earth with any machine, because the pressure would be far too great. We can "see" down there indirectly by using the seismic waves from earthquakes that take place on the other side of the world. When there is a large earthquake, it puts a lot of energy into the Earth. Is it illegal to dig a tunnel?
Tunnel construction is a sub-discipline of civil engineering and usually the domain of engineers and construction companies. When civilians dig tunnels it may be for criminal purposes, like smuggling or hiding illegal goods, or gaining unauthorised access to an area. What If You Drilled a Hole Through Earth?
What would happen if you jumped into a hole through the Earth's center?
Without air, there would be no air resistance. You would therefore accelerate to incredible speeds as you fall, reaching a maximum speed on the order of tens of thousands of kilometers per hour . You reach earth's center in a matter of minutes or hours instead of weeks. Will we ever reach the Earth's core?
Short answer: No. On the large scale you can think of the Earth as a big ball of fluid. Withstanding the pressure of the bottom of the ocean is something that we are barely able to do, and that is only 0.2% of the way to the center of the Earth. What was found in deepest hole on Earth?
Metamorphic RockThe rock was found out to only be granite, even at the deepest part of the borehole. The change in seismic waves wasn't because of a change to basalt, but simply metamorphic differences in the rock. And then there was also the discovery of flowing water several miles in the Earth's crust.
